Colorado Weather and Your Pet

Colorado weather varies throughout the year.  Please use these tips to keep your pets safe.

Summer Weather

Heat can cause illness and even death in extreme circumstances. Dogs left outdoors must have adequate shade, shelter from the elements and clean, fresh water available at all times. Exercise your pet in the morning or evening hours to avoid heat issues with your animal.

Leaving your pet in a vehicle can be very dangerous. A car interior can reach up to 160 degrees within 10 minutes, hot enough to cause heatstroke, resulting in brain damage or even death. Leaving windows cracked open is not adequate to keep the interior cool enough for your pet.

Call the Lakewood Police Department immediately to report a pet locked in a hot car: 303-987-7173.

Winter Weather

Winter's cold can also cause problems. Clear snow and ice to ensure the animal has a place to stand, keeping their paws from freezing. Adequate insulated shelter must be available, and animals should be brought indoors in extremely cold temperatures. Adequate shelter is imperative for outdoor pets. The shelter should have a floor off the ground, be large enough for the pet to stand and turn around in, yet small enough so the animal can use its body heat to warm the inside. Shelter doors should be covered. Select bedding material that is clean, dry and provides insulation. Your pet needs fresh, clean water - even if there is snow on the ground.

Antifreeze tastes sweet to your pet but can be fatal if consumed. If ingested, call a veterinarian immediately. Antifreeze should be disposed of properly and kept away from all pets and animals.  Wipe up antifreeze drips and spills from your driveway.

Thunder and Fireworks

Lakewood Animal Control wants to remind pet owners that many pets are frightened of fireworks, thunder and lightning. With the coming holiday and seasonal afternoon storms, please ensure your pets are securely confined within your home to prevent their escape.
